Forging an Adze Iron

The shank is forged first (pictures progress from left to right, then down)
The other end is heated so that the blade can be forged, which required a good deal of widthwise spreading. The last few heats are for forging the bevel at the very edge, which also spreads the steel a bit. This is done with a hand ball pein hammer on the anvil.
